OM Newsletter (2019 Spring) No 28

Here is a link to the PDF of the Spring 2019 Newsletter:
OM Newsletter (2019 Spring) No 28

The works of James Butler, mentioned in the newsletter, are too extensive for us to have included the full list. Those who would like to know more can find additional information at http://jamesbutler-ra.com.

Please also respond to the survey at the end of the newsletter which can also be found, in slightly abbreviated form, at Survey Monkey OMs Survey.

Lastly, very interesting reminiscences by John Bunyard were too long to be put into the newsletter but OMs are invited to visit John Bunyard’s memoir.

John Bunyard Memoir

From the membership secretary

Dear Old Maidstonians,

John Bunyard (1972) has been working on an extensive memoir of his time at MGS in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He requested that we publicise it to the membership, but as it is too extensive to publish it the ‘Old Maidstonian’ we are therefore sending it as a website link. He published the first half of his memoirs under the title ‘Through the Red-Brick Gate’ and which can be read at
https://oldbunyardsmemories.wordpress.com/

He has followed it up with ‘Into the Sixth’ on the same website, and in it he covers both his 6th Form experiences and more recent encounters with the School, including a personal tour conducted by the Headmaster himself. OM’s will be particularly interested on the update on the school and its architecture.

It makes for extremely interesting reading, and I suggest every student, past and present, can relate to at least some parts of it.

Warmest regards,
Graham Belson on behalf of the Committee

Tony Gosby (OM 1939-45)

Information from Gardner Crawley on 17 March

I have just been phoned by Tony’s daughter, Judith Winchester, to let me
know that Tony Gosby (aka Denis R Gosby) died in Heart of Kent Hospice on
Thursday 14th March 2019 from pneumonia. Tony was also a Past President of
the OMS.

Prior to that he had spent 2 weeks in Maidstone Hospital after a fall at
home.

Messages of condolence to Olive, Judith, and Jennifer may be sent to:
Phoenix Cottage
Red Hill
Wateringbury
Kent ME18 5LD

As soon as I have the details of the funeral I’ll circulate them [see below].

He was also a past president of
Malling Rotary Club and a partner of Jenkins and Gosby Architects in Bank
Street, Maidstone.

From Tony Bishop on 20th March

I certainly remember Tony Gosby and had professional dealings with him and
his firm. I also recall that, I think. as Past President of the West Malling
Rotary he would organise Panto sketches and Quiz events. This would have
been during my short membership in 1974/5.

From the family, via Gardner Crawley on 23 March

Tony’s funeral will take place at St John’s Church, Wateringbury ( ME18 5PN) on Tuesday 2nd April at 2.30pm followed by refreshments at the Undercroft, Nettlestead Place (ME18 5HA). Please forward this email to any people you think would like to attend.

Judith and Jenny, on behalf of Olive.

2019 Members Register

The new public version of the register can be downloaded here (in PDF format):
OMS Membership Register 2019
Note that to conform with GDPR it does not contain names of those members who have opted out of inclusion, and does not give contact details beyond town of residence. (The Membership secretary does hold contact details, in a secure manner, in the full non-public Membership Register, as described below.)

The covering email message from the Membership Secretary and Treasurer follows
===========================
Dear Members,

2019 OMS Membership Register

Best wishes to you all for the New Year. We hope you have a successful 2019.

We have pleasure in forwarding the 2019 OMS Membership Register, which is published each year with current information up to 1st January. During 2018 the membership rose from 1859 to 2003, an increase of 144.

The Register is managed by the year of leaving the school.

The details of each member which are held in the Membership Register are the name of the member, the years of joining and leaving MGS, the hometown, contact telephone numbers and their e-mail address. No other information is held. This information is used solely for producing the annual Membership Register (excluding contact details), and for forwarding matters of interest such as the Old Maidstonian Society Newsletter and events held by the OMS and MGS.

The contact details of an individual member may only be released to another member. No person who is not a member of the Society shall have access to any contact information contained in the Membership Register. Unless a member specifically requests that their contact details are withheld, they are released to another Old Maidstonian who requests it. Contact information is never released to any other person or organisation.

A member may request that all or part of their contact details be withheld from being passed to another member, or may request to see what data the Society holds on them, by contacting oms@oldmaidstonians.org.uk.

A member’s details will be securely deleted from the Membership Register, should they leave the Society.

There is information missing and there will also be errors since much of the information was taken from the previous card system. If your entry is incorrect or incomplete, or you have not provided the Society with a contact telephone number, would you please consider doing so? Please either e-mail the Membership Secretary at oms@oldmaidstonians.org.uk or telephone 01622 730514.

If we can assist in placing you in contact with any other member then please let us know.

Would you please check the information for your entry. If your entry is incorrect then would you please send a brief message to the Membership Secretary at oms@oldmaidstonians.org.uk. If you have recently changed your e-mail address, or are considering doing so, then would you please inform us. If you have provided a work or university e-mail, would you consider letting us have your private e-mail, which is much less likely to change.

A printed version of the Membership Register is available at £5 per copy including post and packing.

Warmest regards,
Graham Belson on behalf of the Committee
